Configuring data sources

The Data Sources facility provides a way for data captured into some other system to be merged into templates. For example, users may wish to be able to have address and other contact information from Microsoft® Outlook inserted into letters. This would be achieved by defining the Outlook Contacts as a Data Source.

Getting data from data sources into a template

XpressDox Docussembly™ document assembly software makes it easy to perform advanced document assembly functions, like selecting a single instance of a repeated data element, including data from a data source, and using the ‘Refresh’ and ‘Save’ options with templates using data sources.

ForEach: Handling repeating data

The central issue with repeating data is that the number of repeated data elements is not known at the time the template is authored, and so XpressDox offers the ForEach, List and Ordinal commands as a way of processing a variable number of repeated data elements.

Using block commands in XpressDox

The ForEach and If commands are called ‘block commands’ because they are terminated with a separate End command. Between the start and end of the block there are other Merge Fields. There is a special behaviour related to block commands to help with eliminating unwanted empty paragraphs when the start and end appear on different paragraphs.

The InterviewTheme Command

The Desktop interview is, as of Version 12.0, available in 3 different themes, viz. Classic, Blue and White. The InterviewTheme command gives you control of this. It’s pretty simple: «InterviewTheme(White)» This selects, you guessed it, the White theme.

The ChooseFromDataset Command

Please note that this command has not yet been fully implemented in the web as yet. We have a ChooseFromRepeatingData command (which is the same as ChooseFromData, but is a more descriptive name), and a ChooseFromDataElements command. The ChooseFromDataset command combines the functionality of the other two, and adds some

The YearsMonthsDaysBetween Function

As its name suggests, this function takes two dates as arguments and returns the difference as a number of years, months and days. It is not the same as combining the results of the MonthsBetween and DaysBetween functions together with the YearsBetween function. The simplest form takes only the starting

The RepeaterPosition Function

Consider the commands OnExitSet and OnEnterSet. These commands are only executed during the lifetime of the interview, and also contain conditions which need to be evaluated when the user navigates through the interview. Also consider the case where you would like certain actions to take place depending on the position

The Value Function

This function is usually used inside Scripts, when you want to use a script as a function inside another command. The function returns exactly what it is passed, as in: «Script(DemoValue)»«Value(‘This is what will be returned by the function’)»«ScriptEnd()» The use of this script “as a function” would be something

The Execute Function

Execute is used when a sequence of functions need to be executed one after the other. It is typically of assistance in the HotDocs® converter. Here is an (admittedly artificial, but useful for illustration) example: «OnExitSet(Name,Number,Value,(),Execute(SetV(‘X’,12),IncrementV(‘X’),GetV(‘X’)),,EvenWhenNotEmpty)» After the focus leaves the Name field, the Number data element will have its

The Paragraph Command

«Paragraph()» will split a paragraph into two. Providing the name of a Word style, such as «Paragraph(ThisStyle)» will result in the second paragraph resulting from the split having style ThisStyle applied to it.

The Mod Function

Mod is used to get the remainder when dividing one number by another. It is typically used to divide sets of items into odd and even, or in a Rule. For example: «ForEach(Parent)» «Name» «End()» «Rule(Parent, hard,(count(Parent) mod 2) = 0,’Please enter an even number of parents.’)»

The HideFromPreview Command

By default, when the user selects to preview the results of an assembly (during the Interview process), the system will display the document generated by the template itself, and any document generated by the MergeTemplate function. Sometimes, the template author may want to restrict the preview functionality to specific templates.

The EnableWebPreview Command

This command is relevant in the case where the template is to be published to your own Integration Server. It can be used to enable or disable the Preview functionality during the interview process.

The CompareStrings Function

Comparing two strings for equality and inequality is straightforward.  However, because XpressDox relies heavily on XPATH (XPATH Tutorial), it also is constrained by some XPATH limitations. For example, «If((‘A’ < 'B'))»less«Else()»not less«End()» «If(('B' < 'A'))»less«Else()»not less«End()» will result in not less not less being put into the document. This is

Shortcuts when using variables

With effect from Version 7, there are a number of shortcuts for referring to some of the variable-handling functions. They were introduced to take away the amount of typing necessary when many variables are being used. A full list of the shortcuts is as follows: ::A – AppendVr ::G –

The SetWebInterviewMinimumHeight Command

The interview in the browser can vary in height depending on the existence of tabs and other factors. The template author can control the minimum height of the web interview with the SetWebInterviewMinimumHeight command. «SetWebInterviewMinimumHeight(200)» This will set the minimum height of the web interview to 200 pixels. This feature

The DateAsNumber Function

If you want to compare two dates, then typically you want to know whether one date is later than another. The default way that dates are stored in XpressDox is in the format yyyy-MM-dd (e.g. 2018-05-02), but can also be understood by XpressDox in other formats, like “May 2, 2018”.
