The most common problem reported with installing XpressDox for Microsoft® Word 2010 is that XpressDox just doesn’t appear in the Word ribbon after xpressdox.exe (or xpressdox-word-2010×64.exe) has been downloaded and run.
More often than not the diagnosis is fairly straightforward – the version of XpressDox which was downloaded was for the Word 2010 version of the other “bitness”. If you have Office 2010 32 bit installed, then you need the 32 bit version of XpressDox, and if you have the 64 bit version of Office installed, then you will need the 64 bit version of XpressDox. If the “bitnesses” don’t match, XpressDox just won’t work.
The procedure to tell which bitness of Office you have is as follows:
- Load Word 2010
- Press the File menu and select Help.
- On the right hand side of the Help screen about half way down the part that has writing in it is a bold heading saying About Microsoft Word. Just under that is the version number followed by “(32-bit)” or “(64-bit)”.
That’s it.
Then go to the XpressDox download page and download the XpressDox version with the same bitness as the Word version.
By the way, the ONLY difference between the different “versions” of XpressDox used in the different Office products is in the ability to take the quirks of those different Office products into account. For example, the Word 2003 version can’t support the Word 2007 and Word 2010 Ribbon and its functionality, because there just isn’t a ribbon in Word 2003- it’s a toolbar. But the functionality of XpressDox (i.e. the commands, functions, configuration, etc.) is exactly the same regardless of Office version.
Which is great, because whatever you learn and develop in XpressDox in one version of Office will continue seamlessly into the next version of Office.
